The Hawaiian Islands, with their volcanoes, palm-fringed beaches, verdant valleys,
glorious rainbows and awesome cliffs hold some of the most spectacularly beautiful scenery
on earth. However, despite their isolation, two thousand miles out in the Pacific, they belong
very definitely to the United States. If you expect your South Seas idyll to be completely
unspoiled, forget it; the fantasy of a dream holiday in Paradise remains firmly rooted in the
creature comforts of home. With seven million tourists per year, including honeymooners from
all over the world, frequent fliers cashing in their mileage, and almost two million Japanese,
the Hawaiian Islands can seem like a gigantic theme park.

Hawaii Hotels include rooms on Kauai, which are comparable in price to Maui rooms, but bargains can be found on rooms on The Big Island.

The most populated of the Hawaiian Islands is Oahu with Honolulu being the biggest of the Cities in the State.
Honolulu, by far the largest city of the fiftieth state, and with its resort annex of Waikiki
also the main tourist center, is on Oahu. The biggest island, Hawaii itself, is known as the
Big Island in a vain attempt to avoid confusion. Maui and Kauai also attract mass tourism,
while smaller Molokai remains far quieter. All the islands share a similar topography and
climate. Ocean winds from the northeast shed their rain on the windward coast, keeping it
wet and green; the southwest, leeward (or "Kona") coasts can be almost barren, and so make
ideal locations for big resorts. While temperatures remain consistent throughout the year at
between 70°F and 85°F, rainfall is heaviest from December to March. That is nonetheless the
most popular time to visit, enabling mid- to upper-range hotels to add a premium of at least
$30 per night to their standard room rates. A visit to Hawaii doesn't have to cost a fortune,
there are plenty of budget facilities if you know where to look. The one major
expense you really can't avoid, except possibly on Oahu, is car rental-rates are very
reasonable, but gas is pricey. But, there is public transportation around Honolulu.
While rooms on Maui may be more costly than rooms on Oahu the beauty and peacefulness can't be beat.
When you visit Hawaii be sure to visit Oahu, with the beautiful sands on Waikiki Beach, the city of Honolulu and the Pearl Harbor Memorial you will find lots of activities to keep you busy.
Oahu hotels line Waikiki Beach with the best in comfort and convenience.

KAANAPALI , just a few miles north of Lahaina but reliably cooler, was never a town; fields of sugar cane here were replaced in the 1960s by high-rise hotels and condos, each no doubt comfortable enough but soulless en masse. Besides several perfect family beaches - swimming and snorkeling are best at Black Rock , in front of the Sheraton - the main attraction is the whaling museum in the Whalers Village mall (daily 9.30am-10pm; free). Grisly but fascinating exhibits include a iron "try pot," used for reducing whale blubber at sea; such pots gave rise to the stereotyped but not entirely untrue image of cannibals cooking missionaries in big black cauldrons.
A free shuttle bus connects Kaanapali with Lahaina, and a trolley operates within the resort. The warnings of the car rental companies concerning the sinuous Kahekili Highway , which on the map looks like a good route to continue on around northwest Maui and back to Wailuku, should be taken seriously; it's an exceptionally dangerous drive. Two of Maui's most famous surfing spots, at Mokuleia Bay and Honolua Bay, are a few miles along, however, before the road gets too hair-raising.
Kaanapali has some of the best rooms in Hawaii.

The former sugar town of HANA itself might seem a disappointment at the end of the road; it's a pleasant enough little community that isn't especially interested in attracting tourists. Hasegawa's General Store is a friendly place to pick up supplies, and a delightful red-sand beach can be reached by a precarious trail from the end of Uakea Road. Rooms at the deluxe Hotel Hana-Maui. Joe's Place on Uakea Road is a rudimentary but affordable alternative. There's also camping beside the black-sand beach at lovely Waianapanapa State Park, four miles short of Hana.
The square at the heart of modern LAHAINA is all but filled by a magnificent banyan tree , its aerial roots pushing down into the earth to become sturdy additional trunks. Just in front, in the small harbor, the replica square-rigged Carthaginian houses a lackluster maritime museum (daily 10am-5pm; $4). The Pioneer Inn nearby is Lahaina's main social center, great for a convivial, if not quiet, beer.
Otherwise, a walk up Front Street and back down Wainee Street covers most of what Lahaina has to offer. While it does hold some appealing nineteenth-century buildings, the concentration of tourist shops and fast-food places is phenomenal. The view out to sea, toward the island of Lanai , is a welcome respite. If you have the time, consider taking a ferry there for the day; there's little to see, but the main beach, at Hulopoe Bay, is a delight. Expedition provides five sailings daily, from Lahaina Harbor.
